Diljit Dosanjh teases a collaboration with Shakira: Indian version of 'Hips Don't Lie'

Diljit Dosanjh, who has lately been experiencing a wave of global recognition, is now hinting at a music collaboration that may very well be one of the most anticipated music alliances of the year. At the recent Billboard Summit at Toronto’s NXNE festival, Diljit explained to the crowd that Shakira had personally invited him to collaborate on an Indian version of her classic track Hips Don’t Lie.

Diljit, who has already collaborated with global stars like Ed Sheeran and Sia, said this may be a challenging task. “She wants to make an Indian version of Hips Don’t Lie. It’s going to be tricky but I’m in,” he said with a smile while he spoke with Panos A. Panay, President of the Recording Academy.

The idea of the collaboration came about after Diljit and Shakira met at the Met Gala 2025 and ended up having a fun drive with singer Nicole Scherzinger. In a video that went viral, Shakira greeted Diljit by saying, “Say hi to India,” to which Diljit responded with, “Namaste.”

Diljit also spoke about staying true to his own cultural roots while reaching global consumers. "Punjabi culture has its own fragrance," he said, adding that it is something he takes pride in when he represents it internationally.

Even if this project is very much at the beginning stages with nothing confirmed yet by Shakira's team, the mere possibility of it has thrilled fans around the world. Social media is already abuzz with netizens talking about how the fusion of Punjabi folk with Shakira’s signature Latin pop style could sound. If this collaboration does see the light of day, it could be another small step in promoting cross-cultural music partnerships.
