Two in the police net for attack on eatery owners

The Jalandhar police arrested two persons in connection with the alleged attack on the owners of an eatery at Milap Chowk on Wednesday evening.

The two persons arrested by the police are Saurav Singh, alias Baaz (22) and Saurav, alias Sonu (20). Both hail from Kapurthala. The duo was part of the 15 youths dressed like Nihangs and attacked three owners of Duggal Chaap House.

Akarshi Jain, ADCP-I, Jalandhar, said an FIR No. 52 had been registered under Sections 109, 332, 191 and 190 of BNS, and Section 25 of the Arms Act at Police Station Division No. 4. She said both accused were produced in the court today. The police got their remand for five days.

The ADCP said, “The accused are being interrogated to establish the identity of the other accused. We still cannot say whether they were all genuinely Nihangs and were associated with any jatha or they had worn that attire to hide their identity. We shall know that in due course of time."

A group of about 15 youths had attacked three brothers, who own the eatery, with swords as their order had not been delivered to them in time. The miscreants also vandalised the shop. The whole incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed in the shop. They had even snatched a gold chain one of the owners was wearing.

Members of the Traders Forum held a meeting in support of the shop owners yesterday and gave the police time till this evening to make the arrest. They had warned the authorities that they would give a call for Punjab bandh if no arrest was made. The members led by Ravinder Dhir had said the incident caused panic in the market areas. “If no timely arrest was made, it would be considered that miscreants had no fear of police and that the law and order situation has gone out of control of the state police and the government", he had said.
