Saratoga to Host Iconic Belmont Stakes for Final Year in 2026
Saratoga Springs, NY – Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) announced today that the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival, the third leg of horse racing’s prestigious Triple Crown, will return to Saratoga Race Course in June 2026 for its third and final year. This decision supports the uninterrupted construction of a modernized Belmont Park in Elmont, NY, set to open in September 2026, ensuring fans enjoy a vibrant, world-class event.
“New York is a hub for premier sports and entertainment, and hosting the Belmont Stakes at Saratoga Race Course for one last year celebrates our racing legacy while setting the stage for an exciting future at Belmont Park,” Governor Hochul said. “This decision will broaden the event’s reach and deliver an unforgettable experience for attendees.”
Following the success of the 2025 Belmont Stakes, where Sovereignty triumphed in the 157th running of the Grade 1, $2 million race presented by NYRA Bets, the 2026 festival is scheduled for Saturday, June 6. Due to Saratoga’s track layout, the race will span 1.25 miles, offering a distinctive twist compared to the traditional 1.5-mile distance.
NYRA President and CEO Dave O’Rourke highlighted Saratoga’s success as a temporary venue. “Saratoga has been an exceptional host for our fans and partners during the Belmont Park transformation,” O’Rourke said. “We’re thrilled to bring the festival back one final time in 2026, with the iconic event returning to its permanent home in 2027.”
By choosing Saratoga over a partially built Belmont Park, NYRA ensures the 2026 festival will be free from construction-related constraints, delivering a full-scale experience. The decision has sparked excitement in Saratoga Springs, where the event has driven tourism and economic growth. Empire State Development’s Hope Knight noted, “The Belmont Stakes has brought new visitors to Saratoga, boosting local businesses and the Upstate economy.”
Saratoga Economic Development Corporation President Greg Connors emphasized the event’s impact, with the traditional Saratoga meet contributing an estimated $9 million daily to the region. “In 2026, Saratoga County is eager to once again showcase its world-class hospitality to a global audience,” Connors said. State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. and Assemblymember Carrie Woerner praised the blend of tradition and innovation, with Woerner noting, “Saratoga’s proven ability to host this historic event sets the stage for New York to boast both cutting-edge and storied racetracks.”
The Saratoga community is already planning for 2026. Mayor John Safford described hosting the Belmont as a great privilege, while Chamber of Commerce President Todd Shimkus shared plans for another “Belmont on Broadway” concert to kick off the festival. Discover Saratoga’s Darryl Leggieri added, “Hosting this iconic event underscores our region’s ability to manage major events, offering a significant boost to our economy and visibility.”
Saratoga Race Course will also host a July 4th Racing Festival from July 3-6, 2025, followed by its 40-day summer meet from July 10 to September 1. The $455 million Belmont Park redevelopment continues, with plans to host the Breeders’ Cup in 2027, marking New York’s fifth time welcoming the event. All race dates are pending New York State Gaming Commission approval.
