Here we are talking about, 1997 film war-drama, Border, helmed by JP Dutta. This movie was inspired by the occurrences of the Battle of Longewala (1971). This movie featured 7 male actors and 3 female actresses, among them Sunny Deol, Jackie Shroff, Sunil Shetty, Akshaye Khanna, Rakhi Gulzar, Pooja Bhatt, Tabu, Puneet Issar, Sudesh Berry, and Kulbhushan Kharbanda. 

A Dream Project

Border was the dream project of JP Dutta. AS per IMDb, he commenced writing the film’s script in September 1995 and finished it by April 1996. The majority of the movie was filmed in Bikaner, Rajasthan. As per Wikipedia, the makers invested approximately Rs 12 crore to produce this movie, whereas it grossed a total of Rs 66.70 crore globally. The crowd expressed their affection for this movie and it became huge crowd puller. 

The movie debuted globally on 13 June 1997, receiving favorable reviews from critics and earning acclaim for its narrative, execution, scope, depiction of the battle, direction, screenplay, performances, and remarkable soundtracks. It launched to impressive box office results, concluding with a domestic net collection of Rs 667 million (Rs 66.70 crore). Box Office India announced it as an All Time Blockbuster. It also emerged as the top-grossing Hindi film of 1997 in India, but on a global scale, it ranked as the second highest-grossing film of the year after Dil To Pagal Hai. Border was the fourth largest grossing Indian movie of the 90s decade.

On 15 August 2017, coinciding with the 70th Indian Independence Day, the Indian Directorate of Film Festivals and Ministry of Defence together organized the Independence Day Film Festival, where the film was shown retrospectively in honor of its enduring classic status and the milestone of 20 years.

The makers are now delivering a sequel titled Border 2, featuring Sunny Deol in the main role once more, directed by Kesari fame director Anurag Singh. Reports indicate that this film will be launched next year in 2026.
