New Syllabus: Now students will learn about relationships, breakups and red flags! New course started

The aim of this course is to enhance the emotional intelligence of students. Under the course, students will learn to understand the foundations of intimate relationships, identify emotional triggers and conflicts, and develop the ability to build respectful relationships

Delhi University: Delhi University is going to start a new and interesting course. This new optional course ‘Negotiating Intimate Relationships’ will be for undergraduate students and will start from the academic session of 2025-26. This course will have a four-credit paper that will help students understand relationships better.

Under this course, students will learn to recognize ‘red flags’ i.e. signs in relationships that indicate trouble or danger. They will understand how to understand emotional difficulties in relationships and how to get out of them and how to build strong and healthy relationships. This course will also help students understand the dynamics of friendship and romantic relationships.

Who can do this course?

This course, designed by the Department of Psychology, is listed on the official website of the university from 2023. This course is for undergraduate students, irrespective of their subject. This course is divided into four main units:

Unit 1: The psychology behind friendships and deep relationships.

Unit 2: Various theories of love and intimacy, including Robert Sternberg’s Triangular Theory of Love and the Two-Factor Theory.

Unit 3: Warning signs in relationships such as jealousy, emotional manipulation and intimate partner violence.

Unit 4: Strategies to promote good and long-lasting relationships.

Classes and Activities

There will be three lectures and one tutorial session every week. The tutorials will include interactive exercises such as:

Film reviews (e.g. films such as ‘Kabir Singh’ and ‘Titanic’ will be reviewed to critically analyse the portrayal of love and conflict).

  • Debates on dating culture.
  • Group discussions.
  • Analysis of social media networks.

Students will also assess their love for their romantic partner using Sternberg’s Triangular Love Scale.

Improve students’ emotional intelligence

The aim of this course is to enhance the emotional intelligence of students. Under the course, students will learn to understand the foundations of intimate relationships, identify emotional triggers and conflicts, and develop the ability to build respectful relationships.

By the end of the course, students are expected to be able to analyze the psychological causes of love and trouble, and apply the understanding gained from it in real life situations. This unique course of DU will not only give students academic knowledge, but will also help them build healthy and strong relationships in personal life.
