The Karnataka High Court has ordered to close app-based bike taxi services like Ola, Uber and Rapido in the state from June 16, 2025. This order was given after hearing the petitions of Ola (ANI Technologies), Uber India Systems and Rapido. These companies demand that their bike taxi service be given legal recognition. Along with this, vehicles with yellow number plates should be allowed to register as transport vehicles. The Karnataka High Court rejected the companies’ petition for interim relief. The court said that these services are illegal without proper rules.

During the hearing, a bench of Justice B.M. Shyam Prasad said that these services will not be operated in the state until the state government implements clear guidelines under the Motor Vehicles Act. The court has given 3 months to the government to make rules.

What was the order given before this

In April 2025, the Karnataka High Court had given interim permission to these companies providing bike service to continue bike taxi services till June 15. However, the court has now refused to extend this relief and has banned operations from June 16. The electric bike taxi scheme was started by the Karnataka government in the year 2021, but due to lack of safety and rules, it was withdrawn in March 2024.

Bike taxis were a means of economical and fast transport in a busy city like Bengaluru. Many people depend on these services for low fares and to avoid traffic. After the ban on bike taxi service, now these passengers will have to resort to auto rickshaws or other expensive transport options.
