‘Felt Very Scared’: Teen Who Shot Viral Air India Crash Video Speaks To Police, Family Says He's ‘Deeply Shaken’

A 17-year-old boy, whose mobile phone footage of the tragic Air India crash quickly spread across social media platforms, has provided a statement to the Ahmedabad police, officials confirmed on Saturday. According to a release issued by the Ahmedabad Crime Branch, the teenager has been identified as a witness in the case, and no legal action has been taken against him for filming or sharing the video.

Aryan, the teenager behind the video, was recording a flight taking off as part of his routine habit when the devastating incident unfolded, news agency PTI reported. The Gujarat-London Air India flight erupted into flames and crashed into buildings on a medical college campus shortly after take-off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday. The crash led to the deaths of 241 out of 242 people on board, in addition to casualties on the ground.

“I felt very scared because of what I witnessed. My sister was the first one to see my video, who then informed my father. I had no idea the flight would crash,” Aryan told reporters, as per PTI.

Ahmedabad Police Deny Detention Of Teenager Over Video

The Ahmedabad Crime Branch clarified that the teenager was not detained or arrested.

“No one has been arrested for making this video. A screen recording of a mobile video went viral. The minor who took the video gave the details of the video to the police. He came with his father to give a statement as a witness. He was then sent away with his father. No arrests or detentions have been made,” the Crime Branch stated in its official communication.

Aryan reportedly began filming just 24 seconds before the crash took place.

Following the incident, Aryan has been in visible distress. His sister told reporters that he was deeply shaken and expressed fears about continuing to live in the area, which he now associates with danger.

“He was not even able to speak properly,” she said, as per PTI.

Their landlady echoed similar concerns, stating that Aryan remained awake throughout the night following the crash and had not eaten anything due to shock.

“He needed constant reassurance to regain his composure,” she added.
