MMRDA Secures 174 Hectares For Mogarpada Metro Depot; Strategic Hub To Anchor Operations Of 4 Metro Lines
Mumbai: After much dispute finally the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority(MMRDA) led by Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, has formally taken possession of 174.01 hectares of land in Taluka and District of Thane for the development of a world-class, integrated Metro Car Depot at Mogarpada on June 13th, 2025. The Free Press Journal had previously reported that how MMRDA struggling to obtain the land parcel following local people opposition.
About The Mogarpada Metro Depot
This strategically located depot at Mogarpada in Thane will function as the central operations and maintenance hub for Metro Lines 4 (Wadala Kasarvadavli), Metro 4A (Kasarvadavli to Gaikmukh), Metro 10 (Gaimukh to Shivaji Chowk Mira Rd), and Metro 11 (Anik Bus Depot, Wadala to SPM Circle, South Mumbai) covering a combined network of 55.99 km from CSMT to Mira Road. Infact, it will be city‘s first integrated and largest metro depot.
The land, located in Survey No. 30 (Old S. No. 28), has been transferred to MMRDA on an “as-is-where-is” basis, as per the Government Resolution dated October 16, 2023, signaling the State Government’s commitment to critical transit infrastructure.
The Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for all four lines were prepared by DMRC, which recommended a single, unified depot at Mogarpada to optimize integration and efficiency.

Aligned with CIDCO’s model of equitable development, MMRDA has implemented a farmer-friendly compensation framework offering developed plots to project-affected persons:
• 22.5% of the land area for leaseholder farmers
• 12.5% of the land area for encroachers
A master layout has been prepared, ensuring connectivity through 18-meter-wide main roads and 12-meter-wide internal roads. The developed plots will be handed over within 36 months.
According to the MMRDA, to maintain transparency, extensive public consultations were held under the chairmanship of Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik and the Thane District Collector on January 22 and February 7, 2025. Farmers’ concerns were addressed comprehensively. Subsequently, 198 offer letters were issued (167 to leaseholders and 31 to encroachers).
Strategic Role of Mogarpada as the Largest Metro Depot
The Mogarpada Depot will be designed as a critical command and maintenance hub for Metro Lines 4, 4A, 10, and 11, ensuring uninterrupted, high-quality operations.
Its core functions include:
• Stabling of trains during non-operational hours to ensure peak-time readiness.
• Heavy overhauls and routine maintenance for all trains on the lines.
• Lifting and equipment replacement, followed by full testing to ensure safety and reliability.
• Integrated control operations through the Operation Control Centre (OCC) and Depot Control Centre (DCC) for streamlined command of train and depot systems.
Together, these facilities will anchor long-term service efficiency, operational reliability, and scalability across the Mumbai Metro network.
Key Facilities at Mogarpada Metro Depot
The Mogarpada Depot will feature:
• 10 Workshop Lines for heavy maintenance
• 10 Inspection Lines for daily and routine checks
• 64 Stabling Lines to house trains overnight
• Underfloor wheel lathe for profiling wheels of rolling stock
• Automated and heavy-duty train wash systems
• Blow-down plant for de-dusting underframe and rooftop equipment
• CMV Workshop for stabling and maintenance of catenary vehicles
• Depot Control Centre (DCC) and training rooms
• Staff quarters for essential depot personnel
Tender Awarded & Construction Status
The prescribed tender process has been completed. As per the approval of the 276th Executive Committee, MMRDA awarded the contract to SEW–VSE JV at a value of Rs 905 crore (inclusive of all taxes).
The Notice to Proceed (NTP) was issued on June 13, 2025, and the land has been formally handed over to the contractor. Construction will commence immediately.
