Thanks to low-code and no-code (LCNC) platforms, building apps is now quicker, more affordable, and open to more people, including those without a programming background. But this also brings up a big question for product engineers: are these tools helpful allies, or do they make traditional engineering roles less relevant?

Low-code tools let you build apps using pre-designed blocks, with a bit of coding here and there. No-code tools go even further, they let you create applications by simply dragging and dropping components, with no coding needed at all. This makes it easier for non-tech folks to create apps or automate workflows on their own. It also helps engineers quickly build prototypes to test ideas before committing to full-scale development.

For businesses, the appeal is clear. These platforms cut development time drastically and allow for faster testing and feedback. They also improve collaboration. Since more people can take part in creating or tweaking apps, engineers and business teams can work more closely and stay aligned. Instead of spending weeks building something that misses the mark, teams can iterate quickly and improve based on real user feedback.

That said, LCNC tools do have their limitations. They work great for simple apps or quick fixes, but when it comes to complex features or unique user experiences, they often fall short. You may hit a wall when trying to customise too much or scale the app for a larger audience. Plus, in industries that require high levels of data security, like finance or healthcare, these platforms may not offer the transparency and control engineers need to meet strict standards.

While LCNC tools can handle the basics, skilled engineers are the ones who design the big-picture systems, solve tricky problems, and make sure everything runs smoothly. They bring a depth of experience that goes beyond what visual tools can offer, whether it’s optimising performance, managing data securely, or building features that truly stand out.

Rather than seeing LCNC as a threat, engineers can look at it as a helpful tool. They allow more time to focus on interesting and meaningful work, instead of getting bogged down with repetitive tasks. When combined with modern AI-powered coding tools that help suggest or fix code, engineers can get more done, faster and better.

In the end, low-code and no-code platforms are not replacing engineers. They’re reshaping how work gets done. Engineers who adapt and learn to use these tools effectively can become even more valuable. The future isn’t about choosing between people and platforms, it’s about combining both to build smarter, faster, and more user-friendly tech.
