Mumbai News: Cockroach Found In Food Tray At Theobroma's Mulund Outlet, Sparks Outrage Over Hygiene Standards

A video is circulating on social media showing a cockroach crawling in the food tray at Theobroma's outlet in Runwal Greens, Mulund West, raising serious questions on hygiene standards and food safety at the so-called elite cake brand. The incident was recorded by a customer and originally posted on Reddit, a week ago and since then it's viral on the internet. The Theobroma Foods Pvt Ltd has now officially accepted that that the incident is real.

"At Theobroma we take food safety very seriously and follow strict guidelines in this regard across all our facilities and stores. The incident in question is currently under investigation," said Sukalyan Roy, Chief Operating Officer at Theobroma Foods Pvt Ltd, replying to the question by The Free Press Journal.

The Theobroma's statement added, "We have also taken several steps to further reinforce hygiene measures across all our facilities."However, customers think the other way. "I am a regularly customer at Theobroma. Be it house party or at office, we order cakes from Theobroma. The rates are a bit on the higher side, but the taste and quality is good. But since I have seen the viral video, I am not sure if I can reorder," said Manish Hiranandani, an entrepreneur and resident of Chembur.

"A big cockroach was seen crawling on the paneer roll. It's scary how the kitchen or storeroom will be if a cockroach can reach to the food rack. How didn't the staff notice and waited for a customer to identify," Hiranandani questioned. The customer who posted the video on Reddit last week, said in his post, 'I cannot believe that this is the condition of Theobroma. I and my friend visited today in the evening and this is literally what we were going to place an order for. Yes we did inform the staff and they did take the whole tray out in front of us but we don’t know what happened after we left." The customer was going to order the paneer roll on which the cockroach was crawling.

The post saw angry reactions by the users.

"I used to love their croissants and now I will never be able to step my foot inside Theobroma again," said one user.

Another user in a sarcastic reply said, "That's the Food inspector doing Quality checks." It is not only Theobroma, but lately grave questions on food safety and hygiene standards have been raised.

Recently, licence of a quick-commercial store - Zepto's facility in Dharavi was revoked. The Food and Drug Administration had suspended the food business license of one of the warehouses of Kiranakart Technologies Pvt. Ltd., the parent company of Zepto, after an inspection revealed multiple breaches of food safety standards.

In another incident, Meraki Chinese, a restaurant in Navi Mumbai recently garnered a lot of flack from netizens after a viral video showcasing a dirty kitchen took over social media. Meraki, however took its official Instagram handle to refute the claims and assure its customers of its quality standards.
