NIA chargesheets 3 in Punjab police post attack, links plot to KZF

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday chargesheeted three accused in the 2024 case relating to a grenade attack at a police post in Punjab’s SBS Nagar district. The attack has been traced to a major conspiracy by the banned Khalistan Zindabad Force (KZF) terror outfit.

The accused, Yugpreet Singh, alias Yuvi Nihung, Jaskaran Singh, alias Shah, and Harjot Singh, alias Jot Hundal, all residents of Rahon village in SBS Nagar, have been charged under various sections of the UAPA, Explosive Substances Act and other related provisions.

The NIA has also initiated investigations against KZF chief and designated individual terrorist (DIT) Ranjit Singh, alias Neeta, along with the outfit’s operative Jagjit Singh Lahiri, alias Jagga, alias Jagga Miapur, alias Hari Singh, currently based in the UK, and other unidentified terror operatives.

The agency, which took over the case from the Punjab Police in March this year, has found that Jagga had recruited Yugpreet Singh through an acquaintance in the UK. Along with other KZF terrorists, Jagga radicalised Yugpreet and communicated with him via encrypted messaging apps. Jagga also provided Yugpreet with over Rs 4.36 lakh in terror funds through a complex network of Canada-based entities, who have also been identified and examined.

Yugpreet subsequently recruited the other two accused, and the trio carried out the attack at the Asron police post on December 1, 2024. The grenade used in the attack had been supplied to them by their foreign-based handlers in November 2024.

The NIA is continuing its investigation to dismantle KZF’s attempts to execute terror attacks on law enforcement establishments, sensitive installations and targeted killings in Punjab.
