New Delhi: Have you heard about the Spanish galleon San Jose that sank 317 years ago, in 1708? The ship was carrying 200 tons of gold and a treasure trove of diamonds and jewels, estimated to be worth USD 16 billion—around Rs 1.75 lakh crore. Since 1708, many countries and companies have been trying to locate this treasure-laden ship for decades. Now that its location has been discovered, a race has begun among the claimants. Countries like Spain, Peru, and Colombia, along with private entities like Glocca Mora and the marine research company Armada, have laid claim to it. These claimants have already spent millions and billions of rupees in the search for this ship.

Britain Sank the Treasure-Laden Ship:

  • The ship filled with gold and silver coins and jewels sank 317 years ago, in 1708
  • The ship was en route from Peru to Spain.
  • The treasure was meant to be used in the war over the Spanish succession.
  • It was discovered near the Baru Island off the coast of Cartagena.
  • Among the findings were gold coins from Lima Mint dated 1707, cannons from 1665, and Chinese porcelain.

Discovered by Drone

An underwater drone has detected indications of a ship on the seabed. Glocca Mora claims to have discovered the ship back in 1981. The sea search company Armada has demanded half of it. The Colombian government passed a law in 2020 claiming everything loaded on the ship. Meanwhile, the Spanish government argues that the country the ship was headed to has the rightful claim over the wreckage.

War between Spain and Britain

Taking advantage of the War of Spanish Succession, Britain seized control of Gibraltar, Newfoundland, and Nova Scotia. High-resolution images have revealed gold coins and jewels scattered within a 600-meter radius. Each coin is said to weigh 27 grams.
