Mumbai: Heavy Rains Cause Flight Delays, Airlines Issue Travel Advisories

Mumbai, the financial capital of India, witnessed heavy downpours on Monday, causing waterlogging in several low-lying areas. The intense rainfall led to traffic disruptions at key locations while both train and flight services experienced delays.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall for the day, issuing an orange alert for the city.

In response to the severe weather conditions, airlines IndiGo and SpiceJet have issued travel advisories for passengers travelling to or from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA).

Both carriers warned of potential changes to scheduled departure and arrival times, advising passengers to leave early for the airport due to slow-moving traffic caused by reduced visibility.

IndiGo stated in an X post, "Heavy rainfall continues across Mumbai, and road conditions remain slow in several parts of the city. Waterlogging and low visibility are being reported on some routes to the airport."

The airline added, "If you're travelling today, please allow extra time and check your flight status on our app or website before leaving for the airport."

SpiceJet cautioned that all departures, arrivals and connecting flights may be affected by the adverse weather conditions, urging passengers to verify their flight status online before heading to the airport.

The IMD has predicted isolated heavy rainfall in Konkan, Goa, and parts of Maharashtra, Saurashtra and Kutch from 18th to 21st June. Gujarat is expected to experience light to moderate rainfall between 16th and 17th June.

In an official statement, the IMD said: "Light/moderate rainfall at most places accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph is likely over Gujarat state during 16th-17th June. Isolated heavy rainfall is expected over Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Saurashtra & Kutch during 18th-21st June, with very heavy rainfall at isolated places."

The weather agency further warned of potential extremely heavy rainfall (exceeding 20cm in 24 hours) at isolated locations in Konkan & Goa on 16th June.
