SGPC axes Pak jatha amid border tensions

In the wake of India-Pakistan tensions, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) today cancelled the Sikh jatha that was scheduled to take part in Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s death anniversary in Lahore on June 29.

This year, the SGPC had received over 200 passports from the sangat that would have visited Gurdwara Dehra Sahib in Lahore and other historic Sikh shrines on the occasion.

*SGPC chief slams Union Minister

SGPC chief Harjinder Singh Dhami slammed Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar for allegedly throwing a slipper at a Sikh man, which hit his turban on June 12.

Seeking legal action against Majumdar, Dhami said the Sikh community had contributed immensely during the freedom struggle and had always safeguarded the territorial integrity of India.

It has been learnt that the Kolkata police have registered a case against Majumdar. The BJP had dismissed the allegations claiming that only a cutting of paper and not actual slipper was used in the incident.

*Bbook titled ‘Pakistan De Gurdhama Di Yatra’ released

The SGPC president released Jaswant Singh Isewal’s book titled “Pakistan De Gurdhama Di Yatra”. He said the book contained a brief history of all gurdwaras situated in Pakistan and would help the new generation to learn their importance.
