Heavy Rain Hits Karnataka: 3 Dead, Landslides Reported; Red Alert Issued In Coastal Districts

Intense monsoon rains have battered large parts of Karnataka, particularly along the coastal and Malnad regions, disrupting daily life and leaving at least three people dead. Several districts, including Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, and Udupi, have reported widespread damage, with homes inundated, roads washed out, and power supply disrupted.

Five landslides were reported in Uttara Kannada district alone, while emergency services continue to assess damage in neighboring districts. Authorities confirmed that heavy rainfall has significantly raised water levels in major reservoirs, prompting alerts in downstream areas.

Red Alert In Karnataka 

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alerts for six districts—Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, and Shivamogga—warning of extremely heavy rainfall and gusty winds of up to 50 kmph. Orange alerts are in place for several other interior districts.

In the northern interior region, Belagavi has been flagged for isolated heavy rain, while moderate rainfall is expected in Bidar, Vijayapura, Dharwad, Kalaburgi, and surrounding districts. Southern interior areas like Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, and Kodagu are also under watch for intense rain and strong winds.

Karnataka Rainfall Data

Rainfall data reflects the severity of the weather: Manki in Uttara Kannada recorded 27 cm, Siddapura in Udupi received 25 cm, and the Mangaluru airport observatory logged 23 cm. The IMD said the southwest monsoon remains active, with heavy showers expected to continue over the next four days.

Bengaluru, though largely spared from the heavy downpour, is likely to experience light to moderate showers with occasional wind gusts touching 60 kmph. The city will see cloudy skies, with temperatures hovering around 28°C during the day and dipping to 20°C at night.

Officials have urged residents in high-risk areas to remain indoors, avoid travel unless necessary, and stay alert to updates from local authorities.
