The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Tuesday claimed that it had killed Ali Shadmani, a high-ranking Iranian general, as the military confrontation between the two counties escalated further.
Gen Ali Shadmani, who had just been named as the head of the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, was the country’s most senior military commander and the wartime chief of staff.
Iran, however, has yet to confirm his death.
The conflict began on Friday when Israel launched a surprise attack on Iran’s military and nuclear programme to prevent its longtime adversary from getting any closer to building an atomic weapon. Iran retaliated, launching a barrage a missiles at Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, bringing the two countries close to an all-out war.
Fears of a wider conflict mounted further on Tuesday after US President Donald Trump posted an ominous message, urging residents of Tehran to leave the city.
So far, over 200 people have been killed on the Iranian side while 24 civilians lost their lives in Israel.
