What's The Theme Of International Yoga Day 2025
As the world gears up to celebrate the 11th International Yoga Day on June 21, the spotlight this year is on the theme “Yoga for One Earth, One Health.” The message resonates deeply in an era marked by climate change, rising lifestyle diseases, and mental health struggles. With over 100 countries participating, the 2025 edition aims to unite environmental consciousness with personal wellness through the ancient practice of yoga.
Where did Yoga originate?
The origins of yoga trace back more than 5,000 years to ancient India. Far beyond today’s gym routines and Instagram poses, yoga began as a profound spiritual discipline designed to unite the body, mind, and soul.
In around 200 BCE, Patanjali, often called the 'Father of Yoga,' compiled the Yoga Sutras, a collection of 196 aphorisms. He defined yoga as “chitta vritti nirodhah”-the pausing of the fluctuations of the mind.
Patanjali introduced the Ashtanga Yoga or Eightfold Path:
1. Yama (Ethics)
2. Niyama (Discipline)
3. Asana (Posture)
4. Pranayama (Breath Control)
5. Pratyahara (Withdrawal of Senses)
6. Dharana (Concentration)
7. Dhyana (Meditation)
8. Samadhi (Absorption/Bliss)
This framework still guides most yoga systems today.
A global movement rooted in Indian tradition
Introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the UN in 2014, International Yoga Day has since grown into a massive global movement. The date, June 21, coinciding with the summer solstice-the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere-was chosen to symbolise light, energy, and balance.
Over the years, the day has evolved into a celebration of both India’s soft power and yoga’s scientific benefits. From the Ganges ghats to New York’s Times Square, mass yoga sessions are now a yearly ritual.
Theme 2025: A call to protect both body and planet
The “One Earth, One Health” theme is more than symbolic-it reflects the interdependence between human health and environmental sustainability. The Ministry of Ayush has rolled out initiatives to integrate eco-awareness into yoga routines this year.
Yoga has long been known to improve flexibility, reduce stress, and enhance immunity. But this year’s celebrations take it a step further by highlighting yoga’s role in addressing global issues. Numerous Health experts underline that lifestyle changes-like daily yoga-can reduce dependency on medication, lower anxiety levels, and even support climate-conscious behavior.
As the world comes together on June 21, International Yoga Day 2025 is set to be a reminder that the health of our bodies and the health of our planet are not separate goals-they are, in fact, one and the same.
