The case began with a complaint from a woman named Lakshmi, who alleged that her younger son was kidnapped by men linked to the family of her elder son's wife. The couple had reportedly married against the wishes of the girl’s family and gone into hiding. In retaliation, the girl's family, allegedly with help from former police personnel and other associates, raided Lakshmi’s home and abducted her younger son when they couldn’t locate the newlywed couple, as per a report on IANS.
The teenager was later found injured and abandoned near a hotel. The vehicle used for the abduction was reportedly a government car attached to ADGP Jayaram. Lakshmi further claimed that MLA Jagan Moorthy played a central role in facilitating the abduction.
"Being a public servant, the ADGP is answerable to the people. A strong message must go out that no one is above the law," the judge said while directing police to arrest Jayaram and present him in the court. "You are not just any individual; you are an elected representative. Instead of setting an example, you are behaving like a third-class citizen," Justice Velmurugan remarked, as per the report.
On Saturday, tensions erupted at the MLA’s residence in Andersonpet when police attempted to question him. His supporters allegedly blocked officers from entering, allowing Moorthy to escape. He has since moved the High Court seeking anticipatory bail.
The case has led to five arrests so far, including the girl’s father and a retired policewoman.
Supreme Court To Review Order
The legal battle intensified further on Tuesday as a plea challenging the High Court's directive to arrest Jayaram was filed in the Supreme Court. A bench comprising Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and Manmohan agreed to hear the matter on June 18, after the appellant's lawyer argued that the High Court order was based solely on confessional statements, reported PTI.
Meanwhile, the Madras High Court has scheduled the next hearing for June 26, with expectations that more revelations could emerge.
