71 candidates in fray for Kalanwali civic polls as nomination scrutiny wraps up

The election process for the Kalanwali Municipal Council picked up pace on Tuesday with the completion of nomination scrutiny. Of the total submissions, 71 candidates have been found eligible to contest the elections after one nomination was rejected during the verification process.

According to Returning Officer and Sub-Divisional Magistrate Rajendra Kumar, scrutiny of the nomination papers revealed that one candidate from Ward 14 had their papers rejected due to errors. However, all 12 candidates who filed nominations for the post of Municipal Council president were deemed valid and are now officially in the race.

For the 16 ward councillor seats, 59 nominations were found to be in order. These include 37 men and 22 women candidates, reflecting a strong and balanced gender representation in the local electoral arena.

The number of candidates varies widely from ward to ward. While some wards have as few as one or two contenders, others, like Ward 6, have drawn as many as eight aspirants, setting the stage for intense competition in certain pockets of the town. In contrast, wards with fewer candidates may witness relatively low-key contests.

As the next phase unfolds, candidates have the option to withdraw their nominations by Wednesday. Once the withdrawal period ends, election symbols will be allotted on the same day, bringing clarity to the final list of contenders and sharpening the focus of the campaign.

With 71 candidates — 12 for the president’s post and 59 vying for ward councillor seats — now officially in the fray, the Kalanwali Municipal Council elections are shaping up to be both diverse and competitive. Polling is scheduled to take place on June 29, between 8 am and 6 pm, while vote counting will be conducted on July 2.
