Civil Hospital to get palliative care unit

Palliative treatment is a specialised form of medical care aimed at improving the quality of life for patients suffering with life-threatening illnesses. It focuses on enhancing patient comfort by reducing suffering, managing pain and providing emotional support. Unlike curative treatment, which aims to eliminate the disease, palliative care seeks to improve the quality of life for patients and their families.

In Ludhiana, District Family Welfare Officer Dr Amanpreet Kaur is spearheading an initiative to establish a dedicated palliative care unit at the Civil Hospital for cancer patients and their families. The infrastructure is being developed, and the unit will soon be operational, she said. Although palliative care is currently available, a separate ward is required to serve patients better. She said the unit would initially have 10 beds and the necessary equipment for it was being arranged. She added that doctors were ready to provide various treatments but there was a requirement for more paramedics.

“Palliative care aims to alleviate the suffering of patients with life-threatening diseases. It can be integrated at any stage of the illness alongside curative treatment. The main goals are to address physical, emotional and spiritual needs and to assist patients and families in decision-making,” explained Dr Amanpreet.

Patients aren’t the only ones who need support during treatment; family members also experience a range of emotions when their loved ones are battling a life-threatening disease.

Sukhpreet Kaur, whose mother is battling terminal stage cancer, shared how palliative care helped relieve anxiety and stress, providing them with the strength to face the situation calmly.

“Families and caregivers of cancer patients endure significant stress and burden. Palliative care has been beneficial as it helps us stay informed about the disease and its possible outcomes,” she said.

A city-based oncologist said, “Palliative care addresses the needs of both patients and their families, improving the overall quality of life and fostering a supportive and comforting environment.”

Counselling, support groups and therapy are often included in palliative care services to address the psychological aspects of cancer treatment.
