Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has stated that the Indian Railways will produce 50 new Namo Bharat trains as well as 100 MEMU trains. The plan is to expand options for short-distance travel. The Namo Bharat trains will be built on the Vande Bharat Express model and will give passengers an experience that is comfortable experience. The MEMU trains will have from 16 to 20 coaches.

While speaking at the inauguration of India’s largest Gati Shakti Multi Modal Cargo Terminal at Maruti Suzuki, Manesar, in the presence of CM Nayab Singh Saini, the minister said, “To upgrade passenger trains, 100 mainline EMUs of 16 and 20 coaches will be introduced, which will ease short-distance commutes. A new factory has been built in Kazipet, and 100 such trains will be manufactured there.”The minister also mentioned the plans to add 50 new Namo Bharat trains. He further added that, “around 1,300 Amrit Stations are being developed, and the ones that are ready were inaugurated together by PM Modi from Bikaner. In that line, 100 more stations will be ready by December 2025, and by 2026, around 500 more stations will be completed.”

Namo Bharat trains are a new type of train, for individual cities or short-distance intercity travel, whereas the Vande Bharat Express can operate as an intercity travel train, operating as a semi-high speed train at only 160 km/h.

The Vande Metro, or Namo Bharat trains, were designed to operate at a maximum speed of 130 km/h. The Namo Bharat trains could gradually replace MEMUs (Mainline EMUs) on the Indian railway network, and will offer a metro-like arrangement for sitting and standing passengers. A 12-coach train can accommodate approximately 1150 sitting passengers and 2058 standing passengers. The Namo Bharat Trains include several modern features and have good acceleration and deceleration ratios while also featuring fully sealed gangways so the passengers can walk between coaches. It also improves the cleanliness and sanitation during the operation.

Namo Bharat trains are specifically tailored for short-duration inter-city travel. Unlike the Vande Bharat, which runs at a semi-high speed of up to 160 kmph, the Vande Metro—now known as Namo Bharat—has been engineered to operate at a top speed of 130 kmph.

Last month, under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Amrit Bharat Station Yojana was launched. Under this initiative, over 1,300 railway stations nationwide are being redeveloped. In Gujarat, 87 stations are being modernised at a cost of Rs 6,303 crore. At the event, the Union Minister also addressed the issues related to how many people use bots to block Tatkal tickets. Addressing the issue, the minister said, “Various issues were raised that many people use bots to block Tatkal tickets, but from 1st July, only those whose KYC is done will be able to book Tatkal tickets. At the booking window too, only those who show their ID will get the ticket.”

Namo Bharat trains are designed with comfortable seating arrangements, air conditioning, and more to ensure that you can travel comfortably. Trains will come with automatic doors and KAVACH anti-collision system for additional security. They will have accessible mobilecharging ports, large sealed panoramic windows with roller blinds to enhance passenger experience. Trains will also feature a CCTV surveillance security feature, and an emergency communication system that will give both the passenger and train station manager peace of mind while traveling on the train. Additionally, the Vande Metro includes modern modular toilets with vacuum-based evacuation systems, further contributing to a cleaner and more convenient journey.

“Another new update has been implemented in the Bikaner division — earlier, the reservation chart was shown only 4 hours in advance, but now we have experimented with showing it 24 hours earlier. We received good feedback from passengers,” the minister said.
