She started her career in 1971 with the Malayalam film Tapasvini. Director K. Balachander introduced her to Tamil cinema through the film Aval Oru Thodar Katha. She impressed everyone with her acting in her very first Tamil film. After this, she worked in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Hindi films.

Over the years, she acted in over 200 films, out of which she played the lead role in 100 movies. Sujatha worked with many superstars, from Sivaji Ganesan to Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, and more.
