'Mindhunter' Season 3 update: One of the lead actors shares David Fincher might bring Netflix series back in another form

It's hard to believe that  it's been six years since Mindhunter ended with its second season, given how fresh the memory of the true crime-based procedural — above all, the supreme quality of it — is in the minds of its devoted fans. And "ended" is not exactly a word that we may want to use here despite David Fincher saying in 2023 that it was officially done citing fewer number of viewers than originally anticipated, and because there were reports of it being put on hold rather than completely cancelled.

Over the years, there has been a strong demand for a Season 3, considering how vast the source material, "Mindhunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit", by John Douglas and Mark Olshaker, upon which the series is based, is.

Now, actor Holt McCallany, one of the lead actors of the series, aside from Jonathan Groff, has given fans a sliver of hope when he revealed a potential development on Season 3, but in a different form – as long as it's Fincher helming it, we don't mind, right?

In an interview with CBR, McCallany shared what he has to say on the new development. "So look, you know, I had a meeting with David Fincher in his office a few months ago, and he said to me that there is a chance that it may come back as three two-hour movies, but I think it's just a chance. I know there are writers that that are working, but you know, David has to be happy with scripts."

So, that's not exactly a confirmation but, as he said, "just a chance." And since Fincher is busy with other projects, it would be great if he finds the time to get around to a new season, provided he and Netflix are happy with the scripts.

McCallany, on his part, wants the series to return as much as any of us because, after all, it gave him a much-needed visibility. "I felt very fortunate and privileged to have gotten to do that show at all," he added. "I would love it if it were to return. I think, like I said, you know, he gave me a little bit of hope when I had that meeting with him, but the sun, the moon, and the stars would all have to align."

McCallany, who has been in the business since the 1980s, and recently appeared in tentpole films such as Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning, and worked with filmmakers like Guy Ritchie (in "Wrath of Man"), and demonstrated a strong presence in other television series such as Foundation (on Apple TV+)  and The Lincoln Lawyer (Season 3).

Interestingly, McCallany has a past connection to Fincher, by lending his voice to a character in the video game adaptation of the Se7en director's cult film Fight Club. He will be next seen in the a new Netflix series, The Waterfront.

Mindhunter, which was created by Joe Penhall, and saw some of Hollywood's most seasoned and celebrated directors like Andrew Dominik ("The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford", "Blonde") and Carl Franklin ("Devil in a Blue Dress", One False Move") directing some of the episodes alongside Fincher, who also served as a one of the executive producers alongside Penhall and actress Charlize Theron.
