Maharashtra Monsoon: Godavari, Mutha Rivers Swell; Nashik, Pune On Alert Amid Heavy Rains

Heavy rains continued to batter Maharashtra for the second straight day on Thursday, causing a rise in river water levels and flooding low-lying areas in Nashik and Pune. Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain cautious as water was released from multiple dams due to overflowing reservoirs.

Godavari Rises in Nashik, People Advised to Stay Alert

In Nashik district, continuous rainfall led to a sharp rise in the Godavari river’s water level. Officials attributed this to increased inflow into the Gangapur dam, which supplies water to the city. The district administration has advised people living near the riverbanks and in low-lying areas to stay alert and take necessary precautions.

The situation remains tense in Dindori taluka, where rivers like Daman and Kolwan are flowing near danger levels. Authorities have warned of possible water discharge from Palkhed dam into the Kadva river, further escalating flood risk. On Thursday, 1,100 cusecs of water were released from the Darna dam, while 500 cusecs will be released from Gangapur dam at 6 am on Friday, increasing to 1,000 cusecs by 9 am, officials said.

Flooding has already affected parts of Nashik city, with small temples in the Ramkund area and the Goda Ghat region submerged. Water reached waist level at the iconic Dutondya Maruti idol. Nashik recorded 61 mm of rainfall in 24 hours ending Wednesday and 60.4 mm between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm on Thursday, resulting in waterlogging and traffic congestion across the city.

Pune Flood Alert After Khadakwasla Dam Water Release

Meanwhile, Pune city also faced flood-like conditions following incessant rainfall and rising water levels in the Mutha river. Heavy showers in the catchment areas of Khadakwasla dam led to increased water discharge from the reservoir, worsening the situation in several parts of the city.

At 4 pm on Thursday, the irrigation department began releasing 4,300 cusecs of water from the Khadakwasla dam. This caused the Bhide Bridge—a low-lying causeway over the Mutha river—to go under water. In local tradition, the submergence of Bhide Bridge is seen as a clear sign of significant rainfall in the region.

Residents in Hingane (Sinhagad Road) reported water entering homes early in the morning. A breached wall in the Sainagar locality, left unrepaired, allowed rainwater to flow directly into homes, a resident said.

IMD Issues Red Alert for Pune

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Pune district for the next 24 hours, warning of further heavy rainfall. Citizens, especially those in low-lying and river-adjacent areas, have been advised to remain vigilant and take safety measures.
