Challans worth Rs18 L issued to taxi drivers for not wearing uniform
The Gurugram traffic police issued more than 2,400 challans to auto, e-rickshaw and taxi drivers for not wearing uniform in the past 15 days. Officials imposed a fine of over Rs 18 lakh against the challans.
The dress code rule, enforced in May 2024, was introduced to help passengers identify registered drivers and distinguish them from unlicensed operators. Despite multiple awareness campaigns conducted by the police at various locations, many drivers continued to violate the uniform mandate.
In Gurugram, auto, taxi, and e-rickshaw drivers are required to wear a specific uniform and display an identification badge. Failure to comply with this rule can result in a challan (fine) under Section 177 of the Motor Vehicle Act. The fines can range from Rs 500 for the first offense to Rs 1,500 for subsequent offenses.
The Gurugram traffic police, in a special drive conducted from June 1 to June 15, issued a total of 2,407 challans to drivers for not wearing uniform with the total fine amounting to Rs 18,10500.
“The uniform and badge are intended to help passengers easily identify registered drivers and distinguish them from unlicensed operators. The Gurugram traffic police conduct regular drives to check for compliance and issue challans to those violating the uniform rule. Such challan campaigns will continue in future also by the traffic police,” said Rajesh Mohan, DCP (Traffic).
During the campaign, the police also educated auto, taxi, and e-rickshaw drivers about courteous behaviour with passengers, adhering to speed limits, avoid mobile phone use, staying sober while driving, following traffic rules, and provided information about dial 112 and helpline number 1095 to awareness, added
DCP Mohan.
