Empowering girls through yoga and skill training
International Yoga Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm at Yog Manav Vikas Trust (YMVT), Banikhet, on Saturday with the trainee girls participated in yoga and meditation.
The celebration began early in the morning with Surya Namaskar, breathing exercises and light meditation. Trainers also spoke about the importance of yoga in daily life and how it helps in building a strong mind and body.
YMVT chairperson Kiran Dodeja said yoga and moral teachings are a regular part of the training at the Trust. Every day, classes begin with yoga and short talks on good values. This has helped the girls become more confident, respectful and ready to face challenges in life.
“We believe that building a strong moral foundation is just as important as learning a trade. Our girls are known not just for their skills but for their humility, discipline and ability to face challenges with inner calm. This is the true power of yoga,” she said.
She said since 2003, the Trust has trained over 3,000 girls in various skill courses.
Currently, 80 girls are appearing for final exams and 120 new girls have taken admission in various courses. To support girls from remote areas, the Trust is planning to open a hostel in Banikhet soon. — OC

HPU to pioneer research on yoga-nanotech fusion: V-C
Shimla: In a visionary address on the occasion of International Yoga Day, Prof Mahavir Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Himachal Pradesh University (HPU), announced that the university will soon undertake research on the fusion of yoga and nano-technology. He added that research papers on this unique interdisciplinary exploration would also be presented in the near future.
Speaking at a special Yoga Protocol Programme organised by the Department of Yoga, Prof Singh emphasised the conceptual harmony between yoga and nano-science.
“While yoga is about inner refinement through mindfulness, Nano-Technology is about external refinement at the micro level. The difference is that science uses microscopes to observe the minute, while yoga uses awareness to explore the subtle within,” he explained.
Addressing students and faculty, the V-C stressed that a beginner’s mindset is the foundation of meaningful exploration — whether in science or spirituality.
Prof Singh underscored the relevance of yoga in today’s fast-paced, high-stress world, particularly among youth.
As part of the celebration, research scholars from the Department of Yoga demonstrated their expertise through live sessions on meditation, water therapy, and mud therapy. The V-C commended their performance, calling them “ambassadors of yoga” for their dedication to spreading awareness across Himachal Pradesh. — TNS
