Iran’s Oil Tycoon

Back in 2013, Iran’s richest businessman, Babak Zanjani was arrested on charges of money laundering and corruption. Babak Murtaza Zanjani’s wealth at the time was approximately 13.5 billion dollars (approximately 918 billion rupees). The 41-year-old built a massive business empire in a very short period, becoming Iran’s richest businessman in just a few years.

Corruption Charges And Death Sentence

Zanjani was arrested in 2013, during the presidency of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. He was accused of illegally receiving billions of rupees from foreign countries in his accounts in exchange for oil sales. Back then, several foreign countries had imposed sanctions on the middle country, due to which the transfer of foreign currency to Iranian banks was not possible.

As foreign money transfer was not possible, Zanjani took the money into his account. But when Hassan Rouhani swore oath as President of Iran, he immediately issued orders to arrest the 41-year-old businessman, accusing him of receiving 2.8 billion dollars from foreign countries in his accounts in exchange for oil sales.

Three Years Of Legal Proceedings, Then Death Sentence

Babak Zanjani’s three-year trial resulted in a death sentence for money laundering and corruption in 2016, a verdict upheld by the Supreme Court. While initially sentenced to death, his punishment was commuted to 20 years’ imprisonment. He remains incarcerated, having been accused of illicitly receiving USD2.8 billion in foreign funds linked to oil sales.
