50% increase in foreign tourist arrival in Lahaul-Spiti in 3 years

The tribal district of Lahaul and Spiti in Himachal Pradesh has witnessed a consistent rise in foreign tourist arrivals over the past three years, marking a positive trend for the region’’s tourism industry. According to data obtained from the Tourism Department, foreign tourist footfall has nearly doubled from 2022 to 2024.

In 2022, a total of 3,792 foreign tourists visited the district. The number surged to 7,035 in 2023 and further increased to 7,504 in 2024.

This upward trajectory has been welcomed by local tourism stakeholders, who see it as a sign of the region’s growing appeals on the international tourism map.

The monthly data indicates seasonal variations, with July and September seeing the highest footfall.

In 2022, the district recorded its peak foreign tourist arrival in July with 1,323 visitors, while the lowest number — just eight — was recorded in February. In 2023, the highest number of foreign tourists, 1,830, visited in September, while only 13 came in November. The trend continued in 2024, with July witnessing the highest influx at 2,118 foreign tourists, while December saw the lowest count at 23.

Tourism stakeholders in the district have welcomed the development, calling it a positive sign for the region’s

economy.

Speaking to The Tribune, Vikram Katoch, a prominent tourism operator from the Lahaul valley, said, “Tourists from countries like Britain, Russia, the Netherlands, Israel and others are increasingly showing interest in visiting Lahaul-Spiti. The consistent growth in numbers is encouraging.”

Katoch further added that domestic tourist arrivals had also seen a significant rise over the past few years, contributing to the district’’s overall tourism boom. However, he emphasised the urgent need for the development of basic infrastructure such as roads, healthcare, accommodation and connectivity to support and sustain this growth.

“This region is blessed with immense natural beauty — its unique landscapes, high mountain passes, monasteries and untouched culture attract visitors from all over the world,” Katoch said. “If the government prioritises infrastructure development here, Lahaul-Spiti can emerge as one of the top high-altitude tourist destinations in India.”

The district administration has acknowledged the trend and assured that steps are being taken to improve tourism facilities in the region.
