Trump announces Israel-Iran ceasefire, says ‘The 12 day war’ could have gone on for years and…
US President Donald Trump announced on Monday (local time) that its ally Israel and Iran have agreed to a “complete and total ceasefire” which would be phased in over 24 hours. He called the conflict between the the two countries the “12-day War.” Trump also suggested that both countries would have time to conclude ongoing missions before the ceasefire begins in a staged process.
“CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE! It has been fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran that there will be a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE (in approximately 6 hours from now, when Israel and Iran have wound down and completed their in progress, final missions!), for 12 hours, at which point the War will be considered, ENDED!,” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform.
Trump further claimed that the war between Israel and Iran could have continued for years and destroyed the Middle East. “On the assumption that everything works as it should, which it will, I would like to congratulate both Countries, Israel and Iran, on having the Stamina, Courage, and Intelligence to end, what should be called, “THE 12 DAY WAR.”,” Trump wrote.
His message came just minutes after both sides had made fresh threats of new attacks.
However, according to CNN, a senior official in Iran said that they hadn’t been offered any ceasefire deal and didn’t see a reason for one at the moment.
Earlier that day, Trump said he hoped Israel would move toward peace. He also brushed off Iran’s recent missile attack on a U.S. base, which didn’t hurt anyone, and even thanked Iran for giving a warning ahead of time.
This update came just hours after Iran fired missiles at a US air base in Qatar. The strike was in response to an American bombing of Iran’s nuclear sites the day before.
Earlier, former President Trump had thanked Iran for giving the US and its allies an early warning before the missile attack. He also said he hoped that Iran had “let off steam” and that this moment could help reduce tensions in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran.
Since June 13, Israel and Iran, longtime enemies, have been trading airstrikes as part of a growing military conflict.
Iran says ‘no agreement’ on any ceasefire as of yet
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says there is no agreement on any ceasefire or cessation of military operations as of now.
“However, provided that the Israeli regime stops its illegal aggression against the Iranian people no later than 4 am Tehran time, we have no intention to continue our response afterwards,” he wrote on X.
“The final decision on the cessation of our military operations will be made later.”
Israel stays silent
Although some Israeli officials have said the country supports the ceasefire, there hasn’t been an official statement yet. According to reports in Hebrew media, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is said to agree with Trump’s plan, but only if Iran promises to stop its missile strikes.
A report from the Associated Press noted that the Israeli military chose not to comment on Trump’s announcement, and the Prime Minister’s Office has not released any formal response so far.
