The word Hartalika is derived from “Harat” and “Aalika”. According to legend, when Goddess Parvati’s father decided to marry her off to Lord Vishnu against her wishes, her friends intervened and secretly took her into the forest. There, Parvati performed intense penance to win Lord Shiv as her consort. Deeply moved by her devotion, Lord Shiv accepted her as his wife, making this day a symbol of unwavering faith, strength, and divine union.
On Hartalika Teej, women undertake a nirjala vrat. The fast is observed with full dedication, as it is believed to bring marital bliss, well-being, and spiritual blessings. Women dress elaborately in traditional attire, apply mehendi, and adorn themselves with solah shringar, symbolising beauty, devotion, and prosperity.
