Nashik PHOTOS: Gangapur Dam Water Discharge Peaks, Godavari River Floods For Second Time This Season

Due to continuous rainfall in Nashik, Gangapur Dam has begun overflowing at full capacity. As a result, 6,160 cusecs of water were released from Gangapur Dam at 2pm on Monday (June 23), causing the Godavari River to flood for the second time this monsoon season.

Heavy rains in the dam catchment area over the past few days have significantly increased water storage. Water has been released from Gangapur Dam in phases since Friday (June 20). Although rainfall in the city has subsided over the past two days, the rising inflow from upstream has led to continued water release.

On Friday, 1,160 cusecs of water were released, followed by 2,320 cusecs on Saturday, 3,944 cusecs on Sunday, and 6,160 cusecs on Monday and Tuesday. Given this increasing discharge, the water level of the Godavari River has risen rapidly, putting villages along the riverbanks at risk of flooding. Consequently, the district administration has issued a warning to residents.

Citizens residing near the river have been advised to take necessary precautions and avoid entering the riverbed. Farmers, in particular, have been urged to relocate livestock, agricultural equipment, and motor pumps to safer areas, according to Sonal Shahane, Executive Engineer of the Nashik Irrigation Development Corporation. With dam storage levels continuing to rise, further increases in water discharge are likely over the coming days.
