Bengaluru: Woman assaulted, sexually harassed by a group of men in full public view

In yet another shocking incident in Bengaluru, a woman was assaulted and sexually harassed in broad daylight, raising concerns over the safety of the fairer sex in the IT city.

Police have made two arrests—John Richard, 23, and his father, Kanika Swamy—after the woman filed a complaint with the Bannerghatta Police.

The incident reportedly took place on Sunday when the woman was out to buy groceries around 4 pm at Renuka Yellamma Layout near Mailasandra. A group of men, allegedly in an inebriated condition, stopped her and tried to touch her inappropriately.

A CCTV footage of the incident showed the woman trying to resist the harassment and defend herself. At this point, one of the men slapped her, and when she tried to escape, others also joined in and roughed her up.

Later, she was rescued by the residents and one of her friends, a gym trainer.

"Yesterday, I was walking to a shop when I saw a group of men fighting in the middle of the road. They stopped me and started to abuse me and touch me inappropriately. They were intoxicated and tried to sexually harass me, and then the public came to help me," the woman was quoted as saying by NDTV.

Reports said the gym trainer allegedly assaulted Richard while trying to rescue his friend. Following this, Swamy, along with some other accused, attacked him and the residents.

Police have also taken the woman’s friend into custody.
