Union Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu today reviewed the ongoing work on the redevelopment of Chandigarh railway station.

He chaired a high-level meeting, which was attended by senior officials from the the Ministry of Railways, Railway Board, Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) and Northern Railways in New Delhi to assess the project progress and chart the way forward for this landmark infrastructure initiative.

Bittu instructed the officials to speed up the pending works and minimise the inconvenience caused to the general public during rush hours.

The redevelopment of Chandigarh railway station is being executed by the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) under the EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) model with overall project cost of Rs 462 crore. The project aims to transform the station into a modern, world-class multimodal transit hub serving the tricity region, comprising Mohali and Panchkula as well.

The total development area of the station is 1,92,248 square meter with built-up area of 27,383 square meter and revised completion date of the project is October 2025 with physical progress touching 81 per cent.

Sharing the salient features of the station building, the Railways junior minister said there will be new G+3 station buildings on both Chandigarh and Panchkula sides (8,367 square meter each), improving accessibility and passenger movement. A 72-metre-wide and 80-metre-long covered concourse for seamless, weather-protected transit across platforms and two 12-meter-wide foot overbridges (FOBs) to streamline inter-platform movement.

The expanded parking area of 24,515 square metre will be given with integrated traffic flow designs for both city sides.

The station will have 30 lifts and 10 escalators for barrier-free movement, enhanced waiting areas (1,180 square meter concourse with 1,050 seats), food courts, retail spaces, retiring rooms, and co-working spaces, paid lounges and other commuter-focused amenities, 4,000 square meter of commercial area, including kiosks, food outlets, and shopping spaces.

“The upgraded Chandigarh railway station is designed to cater to a projected daily footfall of over 1 lakh passengers by 2061,” Bittu added.
