Kinnaur issues rules for border tourism

Following Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s push to promote border tourism, the Kinnaur district administration has issued comprehensive guidelines for tourists planning to visit areas near the India-China border.

At a meeting held at Reckong Peo under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner Dr Amit Kumar Sharma, it was decided that tourist destinations located near the Indo-China border will remain open only until 2 pm. Tourists must carry an Aadhaar card or any other valid identity document for entry.

“Visitors are expected to follow all standard procedures to ensure smooth and continued access to these sensitive regions,” said Dr. Sharma. He added that discipline is essential, and photography of military installations or equipment is strictly prohibited to maintain national security.

The administration has directed all concerned departments to facilitate safe and seamless travel to popular border sites such as Shipkila, Rani-Kanda, and Khana Dumti. Key instructions include ensuring well-maintained roads, continuous electricity, functioning communication systems, proper signage, and strict monitoring of sensitive areas.

Dr Sharma also appealed to local panchayats, the Army, and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) to cooperate in maintaining order and ensuring safety for all visitors.

“These steps are crucial for encouraging tourism while respecting the strategic importance of our border areas,” he said. “If all stakeholders cooperate, we can offer a safe, enriching, and scenic experience to travelers while upholding national interest.”

With its breathtaking landscapes and unique cultural richness, border tourism in Kinnaur is poised to become a highlight of Himachal Pradesh’s tourism strategy—provided safety and discipline are upheld.
