Cabinet Decisions Pune Metro Phase 2: The Union Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved Phase-2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project.

Cabinet Decisions Pune Metro Phase 2: The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved Phase-2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project. Under this approval, two new elevated corridors will be constructed by expanding the existing Vanaj-Ramwadi corridor (Phase-1): Vanaj to Chandni Chowk (Corridor 2A) and Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi (Corridor 2B).

The combined length of these two corridors will be 12.75 km and will include 13 stations. The purpose of this expansion is to provide better metro connectivity to the rapidly developing areas of Pune such as Chandni Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharari and Wagholi.

How much will it cost and who will benefit?

The estimated cost of the project is ₹3626.24 crore, which will be shared equally between the Central Government, Government of Maharashtra and external agencies. The project is proposed to be completed in four years and will be implemented by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro).

These two corridors will be an extension of the existing Corridor-2 (Vanaj–Ramwadi) and will strengthen the continuous metro connectivity in the east-west direction of Pune under the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP).

Multimodal connectivity and direct benefits to IT hubs

The new extension will not only connect IT hubs, commercial zones, residential areas and educational institutions to the metro, but will also increase the share of public transport. These metro lines will connect with Line-1 (Nigdi-Katraj) and Line-3 (Hinjawadi–District Court) at the District Court interchange station, providing a seamless multimodal travel experience to commuters.

Intercity buses connected to metro

Under long-term planning, Chandni Chowk station will be connected to intercity buses coming from Mumbai and Bengaluru. At the same time, Wagholi station will be connected to bus services coming from Ahilya Nagar and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, so that passengers can easily use the metro network.

How much will metro ridership increase?

After the completion of these two corridors, the estimated daily ridership of Line-2 will be as follows:

  • 2027: 0.96 lakh
  • 2037: 2.01 lakh
  • 2047: 2.87 lakh
  • 2057: 3.49 lakh
