ITR Filing Last Date: It is important for every taxpayer to keep in mind the last date for filing income tax return. Otherwise, they may have to pay penalty.
ITR Filing Last Date: It is important for every taxpayer to keep in mind the deadline for filing income tax return (ITR). Otherwise, there may be a need to pay penalty. This year, the Income Tax Department has extended the tax filing deadline for some taxpayers from 31 July 2025 to 15 September 2025. But this extension in the deadline is not for all taxpayers. There are many taxpayers for whom the last date for filing ITR is still the same. It is necessary for these people to file returns as per the old deadline, otherwise they may have to pay a heavy penalty.
Which taxpayers got exemption in deadline?
This time the government has extended the date of ITR filing for those taxpayers who are not required to get their accounts audited. Most salaried people fall in this category. All these people have now got the exemption to file ITR till 15 September 2025 instead of the old deadline of 31 July 2025.
Why was the July 31 deadline changed?
Usually the government releases ITR forms in the first week of April and also provides online and offline utilities so that income taxpayers can file returns on time. But this time the government released the ITR forms with a delay of about a month. Apart from this, many major changes have also been made in the forms, due to which the utilities also took time to prepare. That is why CBDT extended the deadline of July 31 with the aim of making compliance and correct reporting easier for taxpayers.
For which taxpayers the deadline has not been extended?
Now let’s talk about those people for whom there has been no change in the last date for filing ITR. Such people include those taxpayers who are required to get their accounts audited. Such taxpayers will have to complete the work of submitting their audit report and filing ITR by the pre-determined dates. These dates are:
Last date for filing tax audit report (Section 44AB) (if transfer pricing is not applicable): 30 September 2025
Last date for filing ITR for audited accounts: 31 October 2025
For taxpayers for whom transfer pricing is applicable: 30 November 2025
Date for filing belated or revised returns: 31 December 2025
There is no change in these dates, so if you fall in the category of taxpayers who are required to get their accounts audited, then file ITR on the already fixed deadline.

But in such a case, a penalty of up to Rs 5,000 may have to be paid. Apart from this, if a taxpayer wants to correct any mistake or update the information in future, then he can file updated return (ITR-U) till 31 March 2026.
