Tips For Maintaining Wooden Furniture In Rainy Weather
(By: Lokendra Ranawat)
The rainy season provides a breath of fresh air, but it's accompanied by moisture and humidity, which may have a harmful effect on wooden furniture. As a natural material, wood easily absorbs moisture, and it can cause problems like swelling, warping, or infestation with fungal growth. You can be assured that your furniture looks amazing and remains intact during the monsoon season with a little maintenance and proper care.
Rainy Season Furniture Care Tips You’ll Actually Use
- 1. Keep Furniture Away from Damp Walls
At the time of monsoons, walls can become moist due to water seepage. You need to ensure that wooden furniture is not placed directly against the wall. For this, keep a small gap that will allow better airflow and will reduce the chances of any type of dampness transferring to your furniture.
- 2. Use Protective Covers
If your furniture is placed near windows, open balconies, or patios, it is wise to keep them covered when they are not in use. A simple cotton sheet or a water-resistant cover will help in protecting the surface from moisture, mist, and accidental splashes.
- 3. Ensure Good Ventilation
Proper air circulation indoors helps reduce indoor humidity. So you can keep the windows open when possible or use fans for maintaining airflow. You can also place small bowls of rock salt around the room; these have the ability to naturally absorb moisture from the air.
- 4. Apply a Coat of Wax or Polish
If you polish the furniture before or at the time of the rainy season, it can add a protective layer against moisture. This is also going to help in enhancing the appearance of the wood. You need to choose a polish that is suitable for your overall furniture finish and apply it evenly to get the best look.
- 5. Clean Spills and Damp Surfaces Quickly
Rainy days generally mean more chances of wet items being left on your furniture. To protect your furniture from this, you need to wipe spills or damp spots immediately with the use of a soft, dry cloth to reduce the chances of getting any stains, swelling, or fungus on your wood.
- 6. Avoid Dragging Furniture
With the increasing moisture in the air, wooden furniture might become a little sticky at the base. And if you are dragging it across floors, it might damage both the furniture and your flooring. So for this, it is better to lift the item very gently if there is a need to move it.
- 7. Dry Furniture in Shade, Not Direct Sunlight
While it may seem helpful, placing damp furniture in direct sunlight can lead to fading or uneven drying. Instead, choose a shaded, well-ventilated spot to let it dry naturally.
