Accused In Hanagal's Shivanand Kunnur Murder Case Injured In Police Firing
Tension flared in Hanagal early Wednesday after police opened fire on two key suspects linked to the brutal murder of contractor. Shivanand Kunnur (40), a first‑class contractor, was attacked and murdered on Tuesday while returning home after having lunch on the outskirts of Shiggaon. Following this, police arrested the accused and the open fire incident took place near Kondoji while the accused were being transported following the arrest. According to police, the accused — identified as Ashraf and Nagaraj Savadatti — allegedly attempted to attack officers escorting them.
Police Open Fire On Accused
In response, PSI Sampath from Hanagal police station fired upon the duo to thwart the assault and prevent an escape attempt. Both were injured in the firing.
The murder of Shivanand Kunnur, a prominent contractor from Shiggaon, had sparked widespread public outrage across Karnataka. The killing, believed to be premeditated and executed with shocking brutality, has become a high-profile case, prompting swift action from law enforcement agencies.
Following the shooting, the injured suspects were immediately transported to KIMS Hospital in Hubballi. Medical staff have confirmed that while their injuries are not life-threatening, they remain under close supervision.
Haveri Superintendent of Police Anshu Kumar, who is overseeing the case, stated that the police followed due protocol during the operation. He assured that a comprehensive report would be submitted soon and reiterated the department's commitment to transparency.
Meanwhile, security has been stepped up in Hanagal and surrounding areas to maintain order and avoid any escalation of tension. Investigations into the murder case continue, with authorities determined to bring all involved to justice.
Accused's House Set On Fire
In the aftermath of the fatal attack on local contractor Shivanand Kunnur, alleged retaliation by his family members has sparked fresh tensions in Shiggaon, reported PTI. On Wednesday, police reported that the residence of the prime accused was set ablaze, though fortunately no injuries were reported, as the house was unoccupied at the time.
