Met With An Accident While Travelling On Metro? Find Out How Much Compensation You Can Get, As Per Law
Mumbai: With metro travel becoming an essential part of daily commuting for millions across India, the government has announced a major update in the compensation structure for metro rail accidents under the Metro Railways (Procedure of Claims) Rules, 2025. These new provisions aim to offer stronger financial support to passengers or their families in the event of injury or death during travel.
New Rules Apply To Which Cities?
These updated rules apply across all metro-operating cities in India, including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Chennai, Pune, Nagpur, Noida, Kochi, Ahmedabad and others, where metro networks are currently active.
As per the revised rules, compensation amounts have been substantially increased. According to an Economic Times report citing the new rules, if a commuter dies in a metro-related accident, their family will now be entitled to a maximum compensation of Rs 8 lakh, a steep rise from the previous cap of Rs 5 lakh set in 2017.
For serious injuries such as the loss of both arms, both legs, or one arm and one leg, passengers are now eligible for up to Rs 8 lakh in compensation, compared to Rs 4 lakh earlier. These changes reflect the government’s effort to align compensation with the severity of injury and modern cost-of-living standards.
Other injury-specific compensations have also seen revisions:
- Hip joint fractures or fractures of major leg bones (femur, tibia) will now attract compensation of Rs 1.6 lakh.
- A spinal fracture, which does not cause paralysis but hampers mobility, will be compensated with Rs 2.4 lakh.
- In case of hemiplegia (partial paralysis), compensation of Rs 4 lakh will be provided.
Importantly, the revised law also includes a clause for unlisted injuries. If the nature of the injury is not mentioned in the official list but renders the victim permanently unfit for work (as assessed by the Claims Commissioner), the affected person will still receive Rs 4 lakh as compensation.
The procedure for filing a claim has also been streamlined. The Claims Commissioner now has clearly defined powers and the timeframe for filing and disposing of claims has been set to ensure quick redressal. Applicants must submit relevant documents, which will be verified before awarding compensation.
