Indo-Australian anthology ‘My Melbourne’ to return with a new chapter; four Indian filmmakers to helm the project

Reiterating the message of creativity, inclusivity and collaboration, the second instalment of the Indo-Australian anthology My Melbourne is on its way! With the debut film of the anthology gaining an overwhelming response, fans have been on a delighted wait for long news regarding a sequel.
According to the recent announcement, Indian filmmakers Rajkumar Hirani, Anjali Menon, Shoojit Sircar and returning director Onir, will be directing the second chapter of the franchise.

Produced by Mind Blowing Films and presented by the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM), the movie is a celebration of diversity, collaboration and inclusivity. According to a press release, the project aims to continue celebrating cultural diversity and strengthening ties between India and Australia through cinema.
“The success of My Melbourne has been overwhelming and deeply fulfilling. It has proven that stories told with authenticity and heart can transcend borders,” Mitu Bhowmick Lange, CEO of Mind-Blowing Films, said in the statement. “We are honoured to have some of the most acclaimed filmmakers of Indian cinema lend their voice and vision to the second edition,” she added, expressing his happiness at the continued collaboration.
Raj Kumar Hirani, the mastermind behind blockbuster movies PK, 3 Idiots and Munna Bhai M.B.B.S, talked about his excitement in joining a project that explores diverse human experiences. “My Melbourne offers a rare opportunity to tell a story that is intimate, universal, and culturally resonant”, he said.
Anjali Menon, who is prominent for her nuanced storytelling, mentions how the theme of My Melbourne aligns with the stories she loves to tell – ones that talk about empathy and bring people closer. Sircar, with his bag of hit movies like Vicky Donor and Piku, had always stood apart for his varied storytelling. Adding to the excitement, Sircar mentions that the initiative reminds viewers of how stories rooted in local contexts can have global significance. Returning director Onir talks about the depth of the franchise, adding that My Melbourne is “a story that’s still unfolding”.

The debut movie, which was released in March 2025, featured the artistic visions of the talented filmmakers Rima Das, Onir, Imtiaz Ali, and Kabir Khan. Addressing the themes of identity, gender, race, sexuality, and disability, the film garnered worldwide attention, bagging the best film at the UK Asian Film Festival. It was lauded for its one-of-a-type collaboration and its remarkable feat in initiating meaningful narratives that resonate globally.
As a new phase of My Melbourne solidifies, promising a potpourri of culturally and emotionally charged narratives, the initiative is also a testament to the growing artistic and diplomatic ties between India and Australia.
