‘Mummy curses’: Fungus once linked to King Tut’s tomb now being studied for cancer treatment; scientists say shows promise against leukemia

Scientists have discovered that Aspergillus flavus, a fungus linked to ancient “mummy curses,” contains compounds effective against leukemia cells. Researchers isolated and engineered asperigimycins from the fungus, enhancing their potency with lipid molecules for better cell absorption. These modified compounds selectively target and destroy leukemia cells while sparing healthy ones.
