West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee Slams ECI Over Electoral Roll Revision In Bihar

Kolkata: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday slammed Election Commission of India (ECI) over intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar.

“This revision is actually meant for Bengal which will go for poll next year. Bihar has BJP government and Election Commission will not do anything there just ahead of three months before the election,” said Mamata.

Notably, in a letter to the Chief Electoral Officer in Bihar dated June 24, the Election Commission has mandated different levels of document verification on the basis of the Citizenship Act, 1955.

“They are targeting the migrant workers and people of Bengal. The game that the election commission is playing is dangerous. Are they trying to implement NRC in a different way? How can the election body take such a decision unilaterally without consulting the political parties that play the key role?” questions Mamata.

Taking further potshots, the West Bengal Chief Minister said that the elected government are not ‘bonded labourers’.

“Last time they had included voters from Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab. Last month EC had asked us to provide details of booth level workers. Why will I reveal their identities? The EC is not supposed to ask for this data,” further added Mamata.
