Karnal district jail expands vocational training courses for inmates

In a significant move to enhance inmate rehabilitation and promote self-reliance, the Karnal district jail is set to expand its vocational training programmes.

Currently, inmates are enrolled in courses such as bakery and jewellery making, with plans to introduce additional training modules in collaboration with ITI, Polytechnic institutes, and the Haryana Skill Development Mission.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Uttam Singh and Superintendent of Police (SP) Ganga Ram Punia conducted a review of the jail’s rehabilitation efforts during their visit on Thursday. Jail Superintendent Lakhbir Singh provided an overview of existing skill development programmes and outlined future expansion plans for the inmates. DC Uttam Singh commended the initiative and pledged full support from the district administration. “The jail authorities have identified several more skill-based courses. We are committed to providing the necessary assistance to ensure maximum participation and benefit for the inmates,” he affirmed.

The visit included a thorough inspection of the jail’s security arrangements, which were deemed satisfactory by both the DC and SP. They reviewed various facilities, including the education centre, hospital, video conferencing setup, prison inmate calling system, radio station, kitchen and food quality.

“Under the Haryana Prison Rules, a Board of Visitors has already been constituted to oversee jail conditions. As part of this initiative, we conducted a comprehensive review of infrastructure, sanitation, healthcare, food, and overall welfare facilities. The conditions for inmates are satisfactory,” added DC Singh.

DC Singh and SP Punia interacted with inmates to address their concerns and ensure their voices are heard. They also examined the referral register documenting inmates sent to hospitals to assess medical attention and frequency of referrals.

The District Education Officer and District Employment Officer were present during the visit to encourage inmates to take advantage of educational and vocational opportunities.
