HPU teachers secure UK patent for energy-harvesting smart shoe insole

In a remarkable achievement, Dr Ranbir Singh Thakur and Dr Manish Khangta, Assistant Professors at Himachal Pradesh University (HPU), have been awarded an international design patent by the United Kingdom’s Intellectual Property Office for their invention titled ‘Energy Harvesting Smart Shoes Insole’. This interdisciplinary innovation is the result of collaborative research with Maharaja Agrasen University, Himachal Pradesh.

The patented design features a smart insole embedded with piezoelectric materials and advanced energy conversion mechanisms that harness kinetic energy generated through walking or running. This energy is stored in an inbuilt battery and can be used to power mobile phones, fitness trackers, and other smart gadgets—eliminating the need for external charging. The insole is designed to fit any standard shoe, making it highly adaptable for everyday use.

A fully functional prototype has been developed, showcasing its potential for real-world applications in wearable technology and sustainable energy solutions.

Dr Ranbir Singh Thakur has previously been granted patents for two other innovations: the Employee Behaviour Tracking Chair in 2021 and a Digital Billboard in 2023. A strong advocate of interdisciplinary collaboration, he has also completed a solar power installation course from the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), Calicut. He has authored four books, published over 40 research papers, and participated in more than 60 national and international conferences. Dr Thakur also serves as an editor and reviewer for several reputed international journals.

Dr Manish Khangta, co-inventor and a dedicated academic, has published 28 research papers and three books. He has represented his research work at prestigious platforms in Dubai, Singapore, Sharjah, and Malaysia, and actively contributes to interdisciplinary studies addressing global challenges.

HPU Vice-Chancellor Prof Mahavir Singh extended heartfelt congratulations to both innovators, lauding their contribution to academic excellence and technological advancement.
