Kolkata: Three men, including a former Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) office-bearer and two current students, have been arrested for the alleged gang-rape of a law student inside a college campus in Kasba, South Kolkata. The incident, which took place on Wednesday evening (June 25), sent shockwaves through the city, which was already reeling from last year’s rape and murder of a young doctor inside the state-run RG Kar Hospital.

The assault reportedly occurred between 7:30 pm and 8:50 pm in the guard room of the college. Police made the arrests on Thursday night (June 26) after the student filed a complaint. The matter came to light early Friday (June 27).

According to reports, the main accused, Monojit Mishra, a former student who graduated in 2022 and now practises law at the Alipur court. Despite graduating, he was reportedly a frequent visitor to the campus.

Mishra, was also a former office-bearer of the college union affiliated with the TMCP. Confirming the development, Bengal TMCP president Trinankur Bhattacharya said, “Police will take action irrespective of the political colour of the accused.”

Sources at the college revealed that the main accused had been working as temporary staff for the past six to seven months on the recommendation of the college governing body, which is chaired by Trinamool MLA Ashok Deb. “His employment is renewed every 45 days,” the college’s vice-principal confirmed, as quoted by The Telegraph.

The two student co-accused, Zaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukherjee (20), were arrested from a park near Talbagan crossing shortly after the FIR was filed. Their interrogation led police to Mishra, who was arrested later that night.

“All three mobile phones have been seized and sent for forensic analysis,” a police officer said. A forensic team is expected to examine the crime scene today (June 27). The victim has undergone medical tests at Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) also released an official statement on the issue. "National Commission for Women has taken suo moto cognizance of a shocking incident reported from South Kolkata, where a law student was allegedly gang-raped within the college premises by two current students and a former student," the commission wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
