When Shefali Jariwala Talked About Facing Mental Violence In Marriage With Meet Brothers' Harmeet Singh: 'Was Very Unhappy In My Life'
Actress and model Shefali Jariwala, who rose to fame with the iconic track Kanta Laga and became a beloved symbol of the 2000s era, tragically passed away at the age of 42 on Friday in Mumbai. The cause of her death has not yet been disclosed. According to reports, her husband, Parag Tyagi, rushed her to Bellevue Multispeciality Hospital in Mumbai, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
However, not many are aware that before marrying Parag, Shefali was earlier married to singer Harmeet Singh, one-half of the celebrated musical duo Meet Brothers. The couple tied the knot in 2004, but their marriage ended in 2009 after spiralling into emotional turmoil. In an old interview, Shefali opened up about the divorce and revealed that she faced 'mental violence' during her marriage with Harmeet.
She had told Times Now, "It is very important to understand that you are not being appreciated. Not every kind of violence is physical. There is a lot of mental violence that also happens and you are very unhappy in your life. I think, one of the reasons why I could make the decision for myself, was because I was independent. I was making my own money."
Shefali shared that the biggest fear in India is society's judgment, and how divorce is often seen as taboo. However, she was raised to not care about societal opinions and to do what felt right to her. This upbringing, along with the strong support system in her life, empowered her to make the decision to divorce Harmeet.
Shefali aemphasised that women should understand the importance of being independent and recognise the situation they are in, as sometimes they fail to see it for years and end up being unhappy in the marriage.
"Things can happen amicably for the better but there are a lot of people out there who support you. The police can intervene. We have great lawyers. The law of the country protects women in many ways. They have to seek advice and be strong. They need to try and have a support system of their own and you have to make difficult decisions to move forward in life," she said.
Later, Shefali got married to Parag Tyagi in 2015.
