Lisa Kudrow’s ‘The Comeback’ returns for a third and final season

Nearly a decade after Season 2, HBO has announced that Lisa Kudrow’s The Comeback is officially coming back for a third and final season. The announcement comes right after the show’s 20th anniversary earlier this month.

The official announcement was accompanied by Kudrow’s character Valerie Cherish trying to look excited to announce her new show. In the one-minute clip, Valerie says “This is the last one. All right? Last time. Never doing this again,” followed by repeated takes after numerous failed attempts to announce her new show.

The series, written by Michael Patrick King, executive producer of Sex and the City and Kudrow herself, revolves around Valerie Cherish, a B-list sitcom actress who falls out of the spotlight.  A satirical comedy, it gave a look inside the entertainment television industry and its treatment of women and was shot by a two-camera crew.

The sitcom which had premiered on June 5, 2005, aired for 13 episodes before it was ultimately cancelled. A callback to its title, the comedy series returned after nine years with a second season, comprising eight episodes, which aired from Nov. 9 to Dec. 28, 2014. Though the series was on and off again for two decades owing to its low ratings, it was also a success, and received positive reviews, several accolades, and even four Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Lead Actress for Kudrow.

“No matter what the industry throws at her, Valerie Cherish is a survivor. On the 20th Anniversary of her debut, Michael Patrick King and Lisa Kudrow have brilliantly scripted her return to HBO, and we can’t wait to see that,” says Amy Gravitt, EVP, HBO & Max Comedy Programming in a statement released along with the announcement.

Apart from Kudrow, Dan Bucatinsky, Laura Silverman, and Damian Young will also return to reprise their roles as Billy Stanton, Jane Benson and Mark Berman, in the new season, respectively. Robert Michael Morris, who had essayed the role of Valerie’s best friend and hair stylist, Mickey, passed away in 2017 due to an epileptic seizure.

The Comeback Season 3 is expected to begin production this summer and will be premiering on HBO in 2026.
