India has entered the digital age by introducing e-passports, which will make foreign travel of Indian citizens more secure, faster and convenient. This is a modern passport, which includes RFID chip and biometric technology. More than 120 countries across the country are currently using e-passports. On the 13th Passport Seva Diwas, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar announced the nationwide e-passport rollout under the Passport Seva Program 2.0.

What is an e-passport?

An e-passport is an electronic passport that includes a radio frequency identification (RFID) chip and antenna. The chip stores the passport holder’s personal and biometric information such as name, date of birth, photo, fingerprint and iris scan in digital form. To make it different from a normal passport, it has a golden color symbol on its cover.

Launch date of e-passport in India

The e-passport was launched as a pilot project by the Government of India on 1 April 2024. Initially it was launched in cities like Nagpur, Bhubaneswar, Jammu, Goa, Shimla, Raipur, Amritsar, Jaipur, Chennai, Hyderabad, Surat and Ranchi. After this, it was launched in Tamil Nadu on 3 March 2025. And till 22 March 2025, 20,729 e-passports have been issued in Tamil Nadu. From now on, plans are being made to launch it all over the country.

Eligibility for e-passport

  • Indian citizens applying for a new passport.
  • Indians seeking renewal or re-issue of their old passport.
  • -Individuals above 18 years of age, who have valid identity and address proof.
  • Minor (below 18 years), who have a copy of their parent’s passport available.
  • If you have a traditional passport, it is not mandatory for you to make an e-passport.

Documents required for e-passport

  • Aadhaar card, voter ID, PAN card for identity proof.
  • Electricity bill, water bill, gas connection, rent agreement, or parent’s passport copy (for minor) for address proof.
  • Birth proof
  • Passport size photo.
  • Police report if passport is lost or stolen.
  • Additional documents and proof of requirement for instant passport.

Application process for e-passport

The application process for e-passport is the same as that of a regular passport, which can be done both online and offline.

1. First of all register on the passport service portal. For this, visit the official website https://services1.passportindia.gov.in/psp. Register as a new user or login with an existing account.

2. Fill the application form with all the correct information.

3. Deposit the fee through online payment gateway (credit/debit card, net banking, UPI). Download the receipt after payment.

4. Select your nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) to book an appointment. Book an appointment as per your available time slot.

5. Visit the PSK/POPSK on the scheduled date to do biometric and document verification.

6. After completion of the process, the e-passport will be sent to your address through speed post within 7 to 21 days.

Offline process

Get the application form from the Passport Seva Kendra or District Passport Cell. After this, fill the form and submit the documents. Pay the fee through demand draft.

How much will be the fee for e-passport application

The fee for e-passport varies depending on the normal and tatkal passport:

Normal passport

36 pages: Rs 1,500
60 pages: Rs 2,000
Tatkal passport
36 pages: Rs 3,500
60 pages: Rs 4,000
Minor (below 18 years): Rs 1,000 (36 pages, normal).
