Mohali sanitation workers on strike from June 30
Even as the Municipal Corporation (MC) grapples with garbage disposal issue, Punjab Safai Mazdoor Federation members have announced an indefinite strike from June 30 in the city after a face-off with the sanitary inspectors.
Punjab Safai Mazdoor Federation president Sohan Singh said as long as their long-pending demands are not met and arbitrary attitude of sanitary inspectors is mended, the workers will suspend work.
They alleged that MC was ignoring their demands and has become a den of corruption, further adding, “Sanitary inspectors are getting out of turn promotions. They have been sticking to one post for past 10-15 years. They should be transferred out of Mohali. A probe must be done to assess their income and assets.”
The standoff is a result of clash between members of two sanitation employees unions at the Municpal Commissioner’s office two days ago.
They resorted to sloganeering and staged a sit-in over the issue of attendance. Members from both the groups engaged in heated arguments with Municipal Commissioner Parminder Pal Singh.
