National Statistics Day 2025: Date, Origin And Significance

National Statics Day is observed every year In India on June 29. This significant day highlights the importance of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation. The day also commemorates the birth anniversary of the renowned Indian statistician Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, who is also known as the Father of Indian Statistics.

Origin

In 2007, the Government of India declared June 29 as National Statistics Day in recognition of Professor Mahalanobis' invaluable contributions to the field. He played a crucial role in the development of the Indian Statistical System and was instrumental in the establishment of the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) in Kolkata in 1931. Professor Mahalanobis' innovative work in sampling techniques and statistical methodology greatly helped in India's planning processes.

Significance

National Statics Day raises awareness among the public about the role statistics play in decision-making, governance, and economic development. It also highlights how statistical tools help in areas like health, education, agriculture, employment and other areas.

The contribution of statistics becomes even more crucial for governments while framing policies and implementing welfare schemes. Every year, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) organises special lectures, seminars, and workshops to mark the occasion. Educational institutions and research bodies also conduct various events to engage students and researchers.

On this day, many institutes, government body and other organisation celebrate this day by raising awareness and organises seminar. Through participation in statistical research and applications, the celebrations aim to foster a movement for statistical literacy and to align it with the goals of future generations, all while keeping in mind the contributions made by Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis.
